Course Description:
This 32-hour (4 day) course covers the fundamentals, design and installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and involves actual hands-on work with PV systems and equipment. It is targeted toward electrical contractors, journeymen, instructors and apprentices wishing to learn more about PV systems technology and exciting new opportunities this field.
This program is intended to develop system-knowledgeable professionals in the electrical industry to support the tremendous need for qualified contractors and skilled installers to promote the safety, quality and success of PV system installations.
Specific objectives of this course include:
- Determining the available solar resource and conducting site assessments for PV installations
- Planning and preparing for PV system installations
- Understanding the performance and operating characteristics of PV systems and components
- Selecting appropriate designs and configurations for PV systems and equipment
- Implementing mechanical designs for PV systems that meet the performance, architectural and structural requirements for given applications
- Implementing electrical designs for PV systems that meet the safety, code-compliance and functional requirements for given applications
- Conducting acceptance tests and inspections, and commissioning PV system installations
- Evaluating, troubleshooting, and maintaining PV systems
General Information, Course Materials and Registration
This technical training program is based on NJATC curriculum resources and intended for apprentices, journeyman, contractors, building code officials and other professionals involved in the electrical construction trades.
Prerequisites for this course are a fundamental understanding and working knowledge of electrical systems and practices, and completion of at least one year electrical apprenticeship.
The NJATC Photovoltaic Systems textbook and workbook are provided to each participant. An overview of the text content and lesson outline are provided at the end of this document. Participants should bring a copy of the 2011 National Electrical CodeĀ® and a calculator for exercises.
